Break-ups suck big time!

According to the Kübler-Ross model, any kind of grief sees a person go through five emotional states – denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance (acronym DABDA). Well, break-ups are the same, they are almost always harsh and can tear you apart.

When your heart breaks, you don’t want to turn into a walking mess. Instead, you gotta want to forget the painful memories, get to STAGE 5 and move on to the next chapter of life.

This is easier said than done, I know! But music could be the key to your recovery. So, here are a few songs to help you along the way and make sure that you are back to being the badass boss you were before the worthless ex-messed you up.

1. Denial

Err, this isn’t really happening. Maybe he just needs some time off. We aren’t breaking up, we’re just taking a break. Two days should be enough. He’ll want me back because we’re meant to be.

Well, the first stage of a break-up is denial. It takes you a while to actually believe that IT IS OVER. Till then, the only thing on your mind is to justify your s/o’s odd behaviour. Your belief that this is a passing phase cannot be shaken and, in your head, you are still together.

Let Me Down Gently by La Roux

Standout lyrics:

I hope it doesn’t seem like I’m young, foolish and green
Let me in for a minute
You’re not my life but I want you in it
And I hope it’s sinking in
Left behind your perfect skin
There’s a part of you that’s free
And I know that there’s a place for me

2. Anger

Okay, is he serious? How can he just stop taking my calls or replying to my texts? He cannot treat me like that! This is unfair and unacceptable!

Post the denial, when your heart lets your mind take the lead and reality slowly starts sinking in, the first emotion you feel is anger. It is hard to believe that your s/o does not want to be with you anymore, in the absence of a confrontation or mutual decision to break-up. He/she never took your opinion before calling it off.

I Have Questions by Camila Cabello

Standout lyrics:

Number one, tell me who you think you are
You got some nerve trying to tear my faith apart
Number two, why would you try and play me for a fool?
I should have never ever ever trusted you (I have questions)
Number three, why weren’t you, who you swore that you would be?
I have questions, I got questions haunting me

Drive by Miley Cyrus

Standout lyrics:

You told me that you wanted this
I told you it was all yours
If you’re done with it
Then what you say forever for?
If forever’s out the door
I’ll ignore when you call (no drama)

3. Bargaining

Hold on, we can totally work something out! Let’s talk about it and reach a middle ground. You can’t just leave me.

This stage is just desperation in disguise. This is where you start compromising on your self-respect/ego/whatever is left of those anyway in order to please your s/o. You tell them that you need them and that you can do better. But does it really mean anything? NO. So there’s no point in being clingy.

Remember I Told You by Nick Jonas, Anne-Marie and Mike Posner

Standout lyrics:

Remember I told you, I need you?
Remember the spotlight was there
All of the words that I’m saying
Are just a fancy way of saying “I care”
I don’t suppose you have a moment to spare me
Do you? Do you?

Meet Me in the Hallway by Harry Styles

Standout lyrics:

Just let me know I’ll be at the door, at the door
Hoping you’ll come around
Just let me know I’ll be on the floor, on the floor
Maybe we’ll work it out
I gotta get better, gotta get better
I gotta get better, gotta get better
I gotta get better, gotta get better
And maybe we’ll work it out

4. Depression

I will never be able to forget him. I can never love another again.

When all of your tactics fall flat on your face and you realize that nothing can be done, sadness and dejection dawn in. You lose your belief in love and everything feels bleh!

The Story of Us by Taylor Swift

Standout lyrics:

Now I’m standing alone in a crowded room and we’re not speaking
And I’m dying to know is it killing you like it’s killing me, yeah
I don’t know what to say, since the twist of fate when it all broke down
And the story of us looks a lot like a tragedy now

I Hate U I Love U by Gnash featuring Olivia O’Brien

Standout lyrics:

All alone I watch you watch her
Like she’s the only girl you’ve ever seen
You don’t care you never did
You don’t give a damn about me
Yeah all alone I watch you watch her
She is the only thing you ever see
How is it you never notice
That you are slowly killing me

5. Acceptance/Moving On

I’m a lot better than this. Whatever we had was good and I will always cherish it. But I can’t let him bring me down anymore.

Finally, you realize that the situation is out of control now and no matter how much you want your s/o back, it is not going to happen. Also, there is no point in getting back to a toxic person. There is only one direction you can move in now, and that’s FORWARRDDD! There is light at the end of every tunnel, and you have finally made it to this tunnel’s end. Yay, you!

Stronger by Kelly Clarkson

Standout lyrics:

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger
Stand a little taller
Doesn’t mean I’m lonely when I’m alone
What doesn’t kill you makes a fighter
Footsteps even lighter
Doesn’t mean I’m over ’cause you’re gone

I Love It by Icona Pop featuring Charli XCX

Standout lyrics:

I got this feeling on the summer day when you were gone
I crashed my car into the bridge, I watched, I let it burn
I threw your shit into a bag and pushed it down the stairs
I crashed my car into the bridge
