AUS- SA series have been everything else than cricket. Mired in controversy, be it players’ conduct or spectators behavior, the spirit of cricket has been hurt. But what happened today was unimaginable. Sledging is fine, Cheating NO! What was done by Steve Smith today has hurt the sentiments of Australian fans and cricket fans all over the world.

The incident occurred on the third day of the third test between South Africa and Australia. The third test is being played at Cape Town. Steve Smith asked the junior most player in the series, Bancroft to tamper the ball by putting or removing a tap. Roughing up one face of any ball can help the bowling team to achieve reverse swing. What Bancroft did was unbelievable! He admitted to putting the yellow tape out of his trouser pocket before rubbing the ball.
Called as Rookie by Ponting and Clarke, Bancroft said that team leadership had spoken about it and thought this was to get an advantage.
Right from Prime Minister of Australia to a series of ex-players, reactions have been pouring in. Some have asked for Steve Smith’s resignation and others have asked to sack him and bar him from cricket for lifetime. His brain fade incident while asking for DRS in the India – Australia series last year is still afresh in the mind of fans. Virat Kohli was furious with Steve Smith’s conduct during the entire series and had asked authorities to step into it. This is not the first controversy Smith has been associated with. Previously, Smith has been charged of not following game’s spirit, alleging in indecent sledging and cheating at various levels. But such serious allegations when the cameras can clearly catch him and his team mates of cheating have occurred for the first time.

The stain of this is actually worse than the underarm incident. However bad and unsportsmanlike that was, it was at the time at least within the rules. The ramifications of this are so much broader than the immediate penalty. #SteveSmith #RSAvsAUS

Are you sorry…..?
Or sorry cos you got caught ?
And as a group decision, how is this any different to taking drugs to gain advantage ?

I think #SteveSmith has totally underestimated the ramifications of his appalling actions. He will never ever live this down. 37 yrs ago Greg Chappell ordered his brother Trevor to bowl underarm. What is the first thing we think of when we hear their names all these years later?
